The internet can feel very cluttered when it comes to news for just about anything. For me as a designer, I want to keep up with the latest trends, innovations, and inspiration, but there are just too many websites to keep track of. And as I started working on my own blog, The Sleeve Notes, I had to take into account what would make my site unique.
Over the past few years, I have come up with a couple go-tos when it comes to keeping track of the latest design news and niche websites that provide fascinating content and design inspiration, and some that just fuel my own interests. Below are five of them that deserve a bookmark:
This one’s a given. CreativeBloq is the website of several prominent design magazines, such as Computer Arts and net Magazine. It hosts a wide array of articles ranging from design trends, tutorials, new tech, and showcases new talent. It’s daily email gives you a few articles to check out, and an additional email is packed with awesome deals on software, hardware, and more. And it’s not just for graphic design, either. Web design, UI/UX, 3D, even painting and illustration are featured here regularly.
Oh Beautiful Beer
I love beer. And I’d be lying if I said that beer labels and packaging have never convinced me to try one that I’d never heard of. Oh Beautiful Beer is a blog by Harvey Shepard and it showcases brilliant beer design. From labels, illustrations, to packaging, you can get inspired and a little bit thirsty browsing through this. He also authored a book based on the blog, which I highly recommend, that details the history of beer design from the beginning to the current craft beer boom.
Sidebar is a cool blog that posts 5 links a day, submitted by users. The main topics covered in the blog include web and typography, but other areas are usually covered. Instead of visiting the blog daily, you can choose to sign up for the newsletter, which sends you the links daily. It’s a nice, quick reference to check some of the latest industry news.
The Book Design Blog
The Book Design Blog showcases notable design in the realm of book and magazine packaging. Here you can see that print truly isn’t dead, with some beautifully crafted publications designs from around the world.
Heavy Music Artwork
I’ve always had a love for heavy metal, but a huge part of that also had to do with the art that came with it. Heavy Music Artwork, in addition to being a fantastic publication, has a website that has interviews, art, photography, and design for heavy metal bands from the artists who created it. It’s an awesome site, and definitely worth buying an issue or two because the publication itself is very well done.
